Licensed in 1994 I spent 8 years wanting to work HF. I made a promise to myself that from Field Day 2002 until my birthday in September I would be upgraded to work the HF bands. From Late June until September I studied and passed the General and Extra class written exams and passed the code the very next weekend.
It really got my intrest level way up and I am having a great time with all the bands the service has to offer.
Most of my UHF and VHF activity is related to helping races and events run smoothly with fellow HAMS here in Southern California. Each year I help with Marathons, Adventure racing, Mountain Bike Racing and mountain running events.
We have several operators who monitor check points and relay information to the event director and others around the course.
This is a great way to get familuar with your radio and learn what works best for you when setting up radios in remote areas. I would encourage anyone just starting or who wants to get more involved to get out to and help with an event locally. This will help in meeting new HAMS and learning new operating practices.
